Volleyball federation names squad for upcoming games

The Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) has named a 21-man team which commenced training as of yesterday, as the fraternity prepares for upcoming international engagements slated for Maceio, Brazil from September 27 to October 5.

Guyana produced good performances recently in a South American Beach Volleyball tournament held in Ecuador. They pulled off an upset victory against a much higher rated Peru team. The local men are now in preparation for the upcoming Confederación Sudamericana de Voleibol (CSV) male indoors championship.

The Demerara players will be under the guidance of newly appointed assistant national coach Ian Wills while the Berbicians will have the services of veteran national coach Levi Nedd. Via a press release, Nedd, expressed his pleasure with the recent successes volleyball has been seeing at the international level through the male teams.

He said that plans are in place to commence looking at the female players to begin preparing them for international battle, as invitations have also started coming in.

He added that even though the initial preparation of the male team for the upcoming games will be done separately due to geographic constraints, both the Demerara and Berbice groups will be undergoing similar training.

John Flores, President of the GVF used the opportunity to express his satisfaction with the direction in which volleyball has been going recently.

He pledged his commitment to continue utilizing the relationship that the local federation has developed with the CSV for the benefit of the development of the sport locally.

The president in-formed that in keeping with his drive for introducing and developing the game, his federation recently donated volleyballs and a net to the Plaisance Sport Club and the next village expected to benefit from this drive is Buxton.

He is also scheduled to attend the South American Congress next week in Peru, where he intends to continue strengthening the already fruitful relationship that GVF has with the South American body, as he has indicated that they have offered to help bring the local federation up to a level two status

The Federation also announced that preparation is underway to host a Volleyball Cooperation Programme sponsored by the FIVB (Federation of International Volleyball). The course will be facilitated by Julio Morales, a FIVB international coach out of the USA and will be held from the 5th-9th, September, 2015 at the National Gymnasium and is geared towards introducing the sport to newbies.
