Commander of A-Division of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Clifton Hickens has confirmed that he will be running for the post of president of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) when the entity stages its electoral congress on October 17th at the Sleepin International Hotel.
The long serving lawman who is expected to be nominated by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Football Club, will head a slate which will consist of Arron Fraser, Aduke Woolford, Frank Parris and Charles Greaves.
In an invited comment, Hickens told Stabroek Sport that he believes he can take the sport to another level.
“My focus is on developing the youths. I plan to take football in all the communities within my control. “I plan to use football as a springboard to change how the youths think and get them more involved in a sporting discipline which will in turn keep them away from violence,” he added.
According to Hickens he plans to use football to assist in the holistic development of today’s youths.
“I will use football as a catalyst for the overall development of youth. It is a sport that many youths love and we will be working to get others involved and we will see what football will do for our youth. Football can be used for character building and community building.”
Asked what he can bring to the sport if elected, Hickens declared:” I am going to enforce discipline. Everything will be done in a structured manner and we will grow from strength to strength.
“I know that I am running against some giants but I remain confident that the voters will see the sincerity and my vision which is the development of youth and vote for me.”
Following the conclusion of the electoral congresses for the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) affiliates, the election for the federation will be staged at the Marriot Hotel on November 14th.
The reported candidates for the GFF Presidential post include current Guyana Football Referees Council President Alfred King, former Presidential advisor under the previous Peoples Progressive Party (PPP)/Civic government and current President of GFF Elite League Club Alpha United Odinga Lumumba and former GFF Vice-President Rawlston Adams.
