New Chinese built stadium to be unveiled next month

ST.GEORGE’S, Grenada, (CMC) – Grenada’s new Chinese-funded Athletics and Football Stadium will be unveiled next month, Sports Minister Emmalin Pierre announced in parliament on Friday.

Pierre, who was making her contribution to the 2016 Budget, said that preparations for the handing over and opening of the stadium on January 23rd are progressing well.

The new stadium is scheduled to host a number of regional sporting events in the New Year including the CONCACAF Under-17 girls’ Football Tournament and the CARIFTA Games in March.

“We are very close to the handing over of the keys for the facility…and we are hastening slowly in that process because we want to make sure for CARIFTA (games), particularly, because we want to make sure that we meet all of the requirements for the games,” Pierre announced.

“We anticipate that the opening of this facility would be on the 23rd of January, we anticipate that would be the date, and we are looking forward to that”.

The US$20 million refurbishment stadium project was undertaken by the China State Construction Engineering Corporation replacing the original stadium destroyed when Hurricane Ivan ravaged Grenada in 2004.

Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell has said that the new stadium will be used to help promote Grenada as a sports tourism destination.
