Accolades for Port Mourant volleyball club players in Jamaica tourney

The Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC) Volleyball Club recently returned from the University of the West Indies (UWI) 2015 Pelican Invitational held in Jamaica with tons of confidence following a decent performance in the three-day tourney.

The competition, which spiked off at the Mona Campus, Kingston, began with preliminary round-robin rounds on November 20th and 21st while the semi-finals and finals were played on November 22nd. It attracted six male teams and six female teams, namely UWI ‘A’, UWI ‘B’, PMTC, Utech, Venus all-stars, Vikings (males) and UWI ‘A’, UWI ‘B’, Blackbirds, V/Queens, CBB, G.C Foster (females).

After the preliminaries on Saturday, PMTC was second in the standings having lost only to UWI ‘A’, but on Sunday, PMTC lost against Vikings in their semi-final game 25-21, 20-25, 9-15 while UWI ‘A’ defeated Venus all-stars 25-17, 23-25, 15-13 before whipping the Vikings in the finals, 3-1 ( 25-23, 22-25, 34-32, 26-24).

The female final was won by G.C Foster who defeated UWI ‘A’ Girls 3-2, ending with sets (17-25, 26-24, 24-26, 31-29, 15-13).

At the presentation ceremony held after the male final, national star Quacy Matheson of PMTC received the Best Outside Hitter trophy while Trevlon Mc Rae also of PMTC received the Best Middle Blocker trophy while all of the participants and officials received souvenir UWI Pelican Volleyball 10th Anniversary bags.

The PMTC team took the opportunity to thank the UWI Pelican team and presented tokens of appreciation to the main organizers. The trip to Jamaica was made possible through the sponsorship of the Ministry of Education, Region 6 RDC, GuySuCo, A.
