Recipe for real beauty

Ever wondered what it would be like to put on the most hideous dress and still look beautiful?

I know what you are thinking; is that even possible?

I am not going to sit around and pretend that everything I attempt to wear compliments my image. But some girls just seem to have this superior beauty power that makes it seem impossible for them to look bad even in the ugliest of clothes. Some girls possess this hypnotizing beauty factor that just seems to knock everyone off their socks; like Cara Delevingne. Grace Jones also has that wow factor. These women embrace their trend-setting beauty.

Maybe this is why I don’t look fab in ugly clothes. Perhaps I am too caught up with the beauty industry’s ideology of beauty. For years, I have straightened my hair with hopes of achieving flawless hair beauty. I have sampled most acne treatments to deal with my acne-frustrated, inaccurate, facial beauty. Maybe I feel so compelled to cure my beauty flaws because straight hair and smooth skin was all I was seeing when I picked up a copy of Vogue.

Whether it’s boxy-looking eyebrows, a square face or a manly face structure, true beauty icons all possess confidence. I also believe this is what makes them beautiful. All women are beautiful; don’t get me twisted, but some women just automatically know how to make their own identities shine through despite what is “trending at the moment.” These women are really the ones who are totally comfortable with their image. These are also the ones don’t necessarily rack up the bills when it comes to fashion.

20141115the last wordFor me personally, I haven’t seen too many real beauty ambassadors in Guyana. I find women in Guyana to be still struggling to embrace their real beauty; myself included. For me, real beauty is being comfortable in your own skin so that the confidence shines through. You aren’t bothered by what people have to say because you are that comfortable. You aren’t buying into every single beauty or fashion trend because you know what works for you and you are happy with that.

It’s been a few days since Niketa Barker, the reigning Miss Guyana Universe, left for Miami to compete in the Miss Universe Pageant. I am in absolute awe of how striking she manages to look despite the not-so-flattering clothes. You can’t help but take notice of how she takes command of her clothes and makes you notice them. Whatever it is, Niketa is able smile and ignore. She has the most excellent composure and the most calming smile and stare.

I don’t know if I could ever take control of ‘whatever’ is available to wear and still manage to shine through. I always seem to be bothered about what others may think and how I may look in pictures. I don’t know. Maybe it’s not as complex as I am making it sound but some people are just not that confident and I happen to be one of them.

I guess this is what it takes to be a real model and beauty ambassador. It is the true strength of embracing all of you. Niketa’s pictures for me relate strength and womanliness. She really exudes this confident and comfort-able energy in any fashion editorial she is in. Her dress may be hideous, but her composure is always intact regardless.

It’s been a while since I have seen a Guyanese Beauty Ambassador truly shine through a bunch of unnecessary cloth. I am not a fan of all of her clothes, but I am definitely a fan of her self-assurance.
