Local trends

I did a bit of shopping and browsing locally about a week ago, as I’m trying my best to stay away from internet shopping. It sometimes works out cheaper to source locally.

The main problem with shopping locally however, is the fact that some trends at times take too long to trickle down to local retailers. Too often, you don’t find a good variance of all the trends available on the global marketplace here in Guyana on a timely manner. So you tend to be ‘out of style’ at certain periods so to speak.

20141115the last wordI guess the reason for the long wait for trends on the market stems from it either being too fashion risky like flatform sandals or too pricey for actual functionality and wear-ability. I think the fashion identity of many Guyanese at times is very much shy and due to the present-day economic climate, no retailer really wants to take risks with high inventory.

I found three pieces recently that I absolutely love at That Look Boutique and Colours that are actually trending. If you price compare and add shipping as well, it works out cheaper.

Net galore

Net has not dominated this Spring/Summer’s trend list like denim but for some reason I am seeing it all over. In blouses, skirts and pants, you name it, they have it. The concept of clothes having openings is nothing new. From Kanye West wearing a t-shirt that looks like rats made a feast of it to Versace’s overly sexy appeal, many persons are into this reveal-to-be-sexy-and-get-noticed fashion movement. I think that because of Instagram, everyone has become more confident with the selfie movement and mini videos. People want bolder looks and more daring images and as they say, sex sells.

Flatforms

Flatforms are the official sandals for June, July and August. I think they will replace the gladiator. Thank Goodness! They are oddly funky and more practical than the gladiator. Unlike the gladiator you don’t need firm calves to make these pop and you don’t need to wear them only with short dresses or pants. Flatforms are definitely my new summer slips. They are also really roomy if you have broad feet.

The basic Midi

It’s always good to stock up basics. The Midi dress has been trending for a while. Everyone and their mother seem to have one. The trick for making it look different is by wearing it sportily as opposed to formally. I wore mine on with these slip on sneakers that I found for just about $2,500 in Colours on Robb Street.

Very practical for jeans and very avant garde looking when paired with a dress. I would also wear these slip on sneakers with a skater-like dress. It’s a fabulous look for Saturday day time walkabouts and errand running. Please remember that dresses do not always have to look formal.
