(Reuters) – Honduran authorities have arrested four people in connection with the murder of award-winning environmental and indigenous rights activist Berta Caceres, the attorney general’s office said in a statement yesterday.
A spokesman for the armed forces, Lenin Gonzalez, told reporters that one of the accused was an active duty soldier and another a retired official.
Caceres, a 43-year-old activist who had fought to stop the construction of hydroelectric plants and mines on indigenous territory, was shot and killed at her home in La Esperanza, Honduras, in early March.
Caceres, who had received death threats, won the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2015 for her efforts to prevent the construction of a $50 million dam that threatened to displace hundreds of indigenous people.
