Winston Long, 18, was brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan where he was read the charge which stated that on February 28 at King and Regent streets, he stole from the person of Leoni Robinson a Samsung Galaxy S3, valued $40,000 and from Elizabeth Ramsahar a Samsung Galaxy S4 valued $80,000.

According to the facts presented by the prosecution on the day in question Robinson and Ramsahar were passengers on a Route 44 bus. Both of them were seated near windows with their phones in their hands. Long snatched the two phones and began to run. An alarm was raised by the women and a police patrol responded, giving chase. The defendant was caught and identified by the women as the man who stole their phones. Long was then searched and both phones were found.

He was then arrested and the phones, identified by the women, were lodged at the Brickdam Police Station.

Long told the court that the day the incident occurred he had gone drinking with his friends and was not quite sure what happened, or what he did. But he said he knew that he took the women’s phones and was arrested.

The Chief Magistrate sentenced the defendant to six months’ imprisonment and ordered that the phones be returned to Robinson and Ramsahar.

Long, who was released from prison on February 25, had been charged on December 3 with robbing Vishal Doodnauth of $45,000 and a cell phone worth $5,000, while armed with a cutlass, on December 1, in Georgetown.
