Septuagenarian killed in Aubrey Barker Road crash

A 76-year-old man died yesterday afternoon following an accident on Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt, George-town involving a car and a minibus; another man was injured.

Dead is Trem Williams of Wren Avenue, South Ruimveldt Gardens, Georgetown. The name of the injured person was not known up to press time.

Stabroek News understands that Williams was driving motor car PFF 8165, while the other individual was a passenger of a route 41 minibus. They both sustained serious injuries about their bodies. Williams was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Reports are that the minibus, which was reportedly speeding, attempted to swerve from another vehicle and slammed into PFF 8165 which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The car was badly damaged and the Guyana Fire Service had to be summoned to assist in removing Williams.

When this newspaper arrived on the scene, the mangled car was parked on the corner of the road. Scattered pieces of the windscreen and other parts of the vehicles were visible on the roadway as a number of persons gathered having heard of the crash.

One resident related that the minibus was speeding at the time of the accident. “They always speeding on this road. I don’t know why and where they does think they deh but they always speeding,” he said.

Another woman related that she was watching television when she heard a loud impact in front of her house. “Everything happened so fast and is a good thing no child or anything was in the way at the time,” she related.

Efforts to contact Williams’ family proved futile.
