-released on $500,000 bail

Sean Stoll, who allegedly accidentally shot and killed his best friend, was yesterday charged with manslaughter and he was granted his release on $500,000 bail.

The court of Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul heard that on April 29, at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, Stoll, 36, killed Nafasi Edghill.

Stoll was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

According to Stoll’s attorney, Nigel Hughes, his client and Edghill were extremely close friends. On the day in question, he said, the two friends and two others were travelling to the Guyana School of Agriculture when the incident occurred. Hughes told the court that Edghill grabbed the accused and the gun accidentally went off, fatally injuring him. Stoll and the two others who were also arrested by the police are very distraught over the tragedy, Hughes added.

Police had said that around 3pm last Friday, Edghill, 39, of Castello Housing Scheme, Georgetown, was at Mon Repos when he became involved in a playful scuffle with a friend, a licensed firearm holder and who had the firearm in his hand at the time. A round was reported to have been accidentally discharged and Edghill was struck to his abdomen and succumbed while receiving medical treatment at a private hospital.

Police Prosecutor Brenton Solomon objected to bail, based on the nature of the charge.

The prosecutor went on to say that since the accused and the others who were arrested were all friends, they may conspire and sway police investigations.

After listening to all the submissions, Magistrate Ally-Seepaul granted Stoll $500,000 bail, with the conditions that he surrenders his passport and reports to the Sparendaam Police Station every Friday.

The matter was adjourned until June 23rd for report.
