Farmer dies after being hit by minibus at Garden of Eden

A farmer is now dead after he was fatally struck along the Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara public road on Monday morning.

The accident that claimed the life of Keith Simon, a 37-year-old father of two of Lot 107, Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, occurred around 7am.

Stabroek News was told that Simon was walking when a minibus struck him down.

A police source said the driver, who is currently in police custody, reported that he swerved from a vehicle and collided with Simon as a result.

After the collision, Simon was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he succumbed while receiving attention.

The deceased’s brother, Charles Simon, said family members rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre after learning of the accident and they observed the doctors operating on his brother. Charles said after he identified himself as the man’s brother, he was asked to wait outside.

He said sometime after, the doctor that was operating on his brother spoke with him and “told me they did all that they could.”

According to the man, a post-mortem examination is scheduled to be performed today.

Charles said the family had not received any information from the police in relation to how his brother met his demise.  “I am still sailing. I just want to know what happen… I don’t know what happen,” he lamented.

Questioned on when last he spoke with his brother, he said on Sunday. He explained that he does not have a clear understanding of where his brother was going at the time of the accident but he suggested that he was probably heading to tend to his farm.

Keith Simon was also an employee of the Guyana Sugar Corporation.
