Miner, 18, dies in Konawaruk pit collapse

About 1800h. yesterday, the police say that miner Ramal Williams, 18 years, of 58 Miles, Mabura Road, was working in a mining pit at Konawaruk Backdam, Potaro, when it caved in and he was trapped beneath.

Williams was later taken out and conveyed to the Mahdia Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Investigations are in progress.

The latest death comes despite intense efforts by the APNU+AFC administration to step up enforcement. After it took office, the government convened a Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into mining deaths and a variety of recommendations were made. The CoI was convened in June last year following a mining pit collapse at Pepper Creek, Konawaruk in May last year which killed 10 miners. In March this year, another inquiry was ordered into an incident where a miner died at Konawak, Mahdia.
