Suspect in KN grenade lobbing was army reservist

Shemar Wilson, a suspect in the lobbing of a grenade outside the Kaieteur News office earlier this month, was a reserve member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Chief of Staff of the GDF Mark Phillips confirmed yesterday.

Phillips told Stabroek News last evening that Wilson was a member of the Guyana People’s Militia reserve force. He did not say if Wilson was still a member at the time of the grenade lobbing incident.

Wilson, 20, is one of the suspects behind the act which occurred two Saturdays ago during a wake for Kaieteur News journalist Dale Andrews.

During the course of the investigations, police had issue a wanted bulletin for Wilson.

The police said that his last known addresses were Lot 43 North Sophia, Georgetown and Lot 51 West La Penitence, Georgetown.

Three men have since been remanded to prison after they were jointly charged in connection with the grenade that was lobbed at the vehicle of the owner of Kaieteur News, Glenn Lall.

Alfie Garraway, 36, of Lot 71 Norton Street; Janiel Howard, 20, of Lot 322 Section C Turkeyen and Leroy Williams, 25, of Lot 11 D’Urban Backlands, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan after being charged for unlawfully and maliciously conspiring with other persons to cause an explosion by way of using a grenade, which was likely to endanger life or cause serious damage to property.

The grenade, which did not explode, landed near to one of the front wheels. Bomb experts have since been able to destroy and dispose of the grenade at the Kingston seawall.

The police had said that after reviewing surveillance footage, ranks detained a car matching the description of the vehicle used and the six suspects.
