Youth of Guyanese parentage dies in BVI boat accident

A young man of Guyanese parentage died tragically in Tortola, British Virgin Islands around 10:00 hrs yesterday when the speedboat he was in hit rough waters and capsized.

Trevon Thomas called ‘Mutty Don’, said to be in his early 20s, was reportedly born in the BVI and was the son of Sandra Thomas from New Amsterdam.

The young man was flung into the water after the boat he was in slammed into waves that were created by the speedboat.

The two boats were said to have been racing. The incident was captured by his peers who were on shore videotaping the race.

He was rushed to Peebles Hospital with severe injuries and subsequently died.

The captain of the boat Tarik Aaron was injured and also rushed to the hospital where he is listed as stable. Royal Virgin Islands Police Force Information Officer Diane Drayton has confirmed the accident and the death of an individual.

“Police are confirming a lone boating accident this morning in Road Harbour. One male has died as a result of injuries sustained. No further information is available at this time. Investigations are ongoing into the matter,” Drayton said in a statement sent to the media.

As the news circulated many Guyanese living in the territory went into mourning and reached out to the bereaved family members.
