Man arrested over ISIS bomb threat at city bank

A man was yesterday morning arrested after he entered a city bank and demanded $10M under the name of Islamic State (ISIS) before threatening to explode a bomb that he claimed he had on him.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told Stabroek News that the man, who has been identified as Terrence Anthony McLean, 34, of Charlotte Street, Georgetown, was arrested and taken into custody.

Up to late yesterday afternoon, McLean was undergoing a psychiatric evaluation at Dr. Bhiro Harry’s clinic.

The incident occured around 9.30am yesterday at the bank’s Regent Street, Georgetown, branch.

Stabroek News understands that McLean went to the bank with a bag on his shoulder and approached the manager, who he reportedly told, “I want the money or I will blow up the bank”

He then showed her a paper with the caption “Islamic State (ISIS).” Words on the document read, “There is a bomb in the bag, give me $10M or we will all die.”

The manager alerted the security on duty, who held onto McLean. The police were summoned and they promptly arrived on the scene and took McLean into custody.

A search was carried out on the bag and a knife and several documents were discovered.
