East Canje teen dies after overdose

The sudden death of a sixteen-year-old East Canje girl shook the county of Berbice on Saturday, as relatives and friends are still at a loss as to what could have triggered the teen’s action.

Marissa Singh, of Lot 3 Number 2 Village, died after consuming pills. After the discovery was made around 3:30 pm, the secondary school student was rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where doctors worked tirelessly for hours but were unsuccessful in saving her. Stabroek New was reliably informed that the teen, who lived with her grandmother, stepbrother and stepsister, had been depressed since her mother died in a fire in Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam, during 2013.
