Constable held after allegedly beating, firing at domestic violence accused

About 2000h. last night a mother reported to the police at Itaballi Check Point, that her daughter was being assaulted by her reputed husband, the police said today.
The subordinate officer in-charge sent a constable with a Service firearm, along with the complainant. On arrival, the assailant (reputed husband) was contacted and in the intervening process an argument ensued between the constable and the assailant, the police said.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the policeman struck the assailant on his head with the firearm and he fell, after which it is further alleged that the policeman discharged a round at the assailant, hitting him in the upper chest. The victim was taken by the said constable to the Bartica Hospital where he is being treated. His condition is regarded as serious but stable.
Thereafter, the constable fled, the police say.
Vigorous efforts were launched during the night to locate the constable who was still in possession of the firearm and this morning about 0600h., he was arrested by a subordinate officer and a party of policemen in the vicinity of the Tiperu Crossing.
The Office of Professional Responsibility, is conducting a separate investigation into the purported breaches of standard operating procedure in relation to the report of Domestic Violence.
