Boy, 14, released after questioning over cocaine in suitcase handles

-mom among two to face charges

The 14-year-old who was held at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, on Friday, following the discovery of a quantity of cocaine in the handles of his suitcase, has been released, while his mother and another individual are expected to be charged soon for drug trafficking.

The teenager was among five persons held in connection with the discovery.

A source close to the investigation informed Stabroek News that the teenager and two other persons who were held were questioned and released. His mother and the person who reportedly dropped him off at the airport remain in custody and are expected to be charged soon.

Ranks of the Police Narcotics Branch conducted a search on the teen’s suitcase around 4.20 pm on Friday and uncovered 1.4 kg of cocaine in the handles. At the time, the teen, who was travelling alone, was waiting to board a flight destined for New York.

He was returning home after spending his August school vacation in Guyana.
