No bail for accused Campbellville housebreaker

A 30-year-old man was on Monday remanded to prison after he denied a charge of breaking into a Campbellville home and stealing over $700,000 in items.

Kevin Crandon, of 611 D’Urban Backlands, stood before Magistrate Judy Latchman and pleaded not guilty to a charge that on October 5, at Lot 1 Sheriff and Enachu Streets, Section ‘K,’ Campbellville, he broke and entered the dwelling place of Diana Panday and carted off $740,000 in electrical appliances, clothing and ornaments.

Crandon, the father to five children and a scrap metal dealer by trade, listened to his bail being objected to by Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves.  Gonsalves told the court that due to the seriousness of the offence, its prevalence and the penalty it attracts, Crandon should be refused bail by the court. The prosecutor added that the defendant had confessed to the police that he had committed a similar offence before but the investigating officer did not yet determine where he had been charged.

The magistrate subsequently remanded Crandon to prison. His matter was adjourned until November 2 for statements.
