Three held in separate seizures of guns, ammo

Three persons, including a Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD) businessman, were arrested during the period of Friday evening and yesterday morning over the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

According to the police, the seizures occurred in Berbice, Linden and Konawaruk River, respectively.

The police said in a release that about 1.30 am yesterday, a 41-year-old driver of Palmyra, Berbice was arrested with a 9 mm pistol and 13 rounds of ammunition after he sped away from a police patrol and was later intercepted.

The police release said the suspect was driving his car on the Palmyra Public Road and when he saw the patrol, he sped away. He was captured and searched, during which the gun and ammunition were found on his person.

At Linden, a 32-year-old Bartica resident was arrested after an alert member of the Rural Constabulary observed him with several bags acting in a suspicious manner.

He was also subjected to a search during which a quantity of spent shells and live ammunition: six empty cartridges (casing), 31 spent .32 and 9 mm shells and 21 live .32 and 9 mm rounds were found in his possession.

And as it relates to Konawaruk River, a Diamond Housing Scheme, EBD man was taken into custody around 1:45am yesterday after he claimed ownership of an unlicensed .32 revolver, three matching rounds and three spent shells that were found during a search at a shop in Black Water Backdam, Konawaruk River.
