Warapoka’s Tourism Package set for December launch at World Trade Fair in London

Warapoka Village’s Tourism Package will be launched by the Guyana Tourism Authority and Wilderness Explorer at the World Trade Fair this coming December in London.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Indigenous People’s Affairs, this was highlighted when Vice President and Minister of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs Sydney Allicock led a team from the ministry, the Guyana Tourism Authority and Wilderness Explorers last week to Warapoka Village.

The release stated that the Harpy Eagle will be the flagship image for the product and will be augmented by other keen areas of interest including experiencing the uniqueness of the spectacular shell mound rocks, coupled with a boating experience through rivers, creeks and savannahs.

Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority Indranauth Haralsingh, who was on his second visit to the village, believes the product is a remarkable one since conditions are conducive for tourism activities, the release said.

He added that he is pleased to see the level of interest shown by the youths especially those actively involved in the Hinterland Employment and Youth Services programme from whom the tourism idea was birthed.

Meanwhile, the release stated that six persons from the village will receive two weeks of training in hospitality and financial accounting at the Rewa and Surama eco-lodges in Region 9, to prepare them for the event. Following this phase, staff from the two eco-lodges will travel to Warapoka to assess and give support to the staff there to enhance their product delivery.

The release added that during his visit, Allicock took the opportunity to hand over a cassava mill and a quantity of sport gear to the village, while Haralsingh pledged to deliver a water pump for the village’s guest house. President of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana and Product Development Officer at Wilderness Explorers, Andrea De Caires, also pledged to provide bed sheets and nets for the village’s guest house.

Warapoka is populated mainly by Warrous, in the Moruca Sub-district of Region One (Barima/ Waini).
