Absent miner sentenced to nearly five years in jail for $13M Republic Park robbery

An absent Godfrey Lynch, the miner accused of robbing an elderly caretaker of over $13M in goods during an attack at a Republic Park, East Bank Demerara home, was yesterday sentenced to 58 months in jail by a city magistrate.

Lynch, 20, was found guilty and sentenced by magistrate Judy Latchman for armed robbery. The charge stated that while being armed with a gun on April 25, at Republic Park, East Bank Demerara, he robbed Yvonne Moe of $7,000,000, US$10,000 (equivalent to $2,000,000), a quantity of gold jewellery valued $4,000,000, and a pistol, valued $120,000, which were the property of Harry Narine.

Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt had provided the court with witnesses who convinced the court that Lynch was guilty of the offence.

Among them was Moe, who recounted the details of the robbery to the court.

The elderly Moe testified that she was outside the house looking for a ladder when she noticed two persons at the back. She said that after seeing the strange men, she proceeded to run back into the house but was caught by one of them, who then dragged her into the house.

Moe said the men demanded to know where her employer kept his money and jewellery. The witness also said that the men asked her if she knew where a gun was and she told tell no since she did not live here.

Lynch, who had represented himself in the matter, had cross-examined the witness and suggested to her that she did not know the identity of the robbers.
