Guard shot during attempted E.C Vieira payroll robbery

A guard was shot yesterday during an attempt by a bandit to steal the payroll for E.C. Vieira Investment.

The attack, which occurred at Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara, left Lionel Nixon hospitalised up to last evening. However, due to the quick action of his colleague, who fired at their assailant, the bandit fled without the payroll and his gun.

A Guyana Police Force statement said that the attack occurred around 1.50pm when the guards were returning to the company’s Houston offices in a company car.

While they were at Peter’s Hall, in slow moving traffic, police said, the armed bandit approached from Nixon’s side of the vehicle and shot at him. Nixon, who was in the front passenger seat, sustained a wound to upper part of his left leg. The shot also shattered the front wind screen.

However, the driver of the vehicle, Joseph Ferrier, who was armed with a licensed handgun, shot at the bandit, who immediately dropped his 9mm Beretta pistol with 16 live matching rounds and fled the scene on a waiting CG motorcycle, escaping in a northerly direction.

Nixon was rushed to a private hospital, where he was admitted and due to undergo surgery. One spent shell was recovered at the scene by investigators, police added.
