Cartoon captured attention

Dear Editor,

I am cocksure that there were a thousand more like me whose attention was also caught by it.

I’m talking about that cartoon by P Harris depicting “mental strength”, in SN Jan, 21. Yet again that master craftsman of cartoons came through with flying colours with that creation, making his contribution on the disturbing and rapid increase in suicide which has become pervasive in the land.

The cartoon quite rightly shows what appears to be a relatively young woman in silhouette, legs spread in a defiant stand, sword in hand outstretched as she severs a hanging rope with a noose while uttering words of resistance in a poetic delivery.

“Mental strength/ that’s all you need, a trusted friend/ you don’t want a sudden end, to all you’ve gained, to all you’ve loved to those you’ve helped to rise above. Not all is lost with energy spent/ your best friend is your mental strength.”

Once again, as per usual P Harris has captured that imperceptible ticking timebomb lurking within the heads of so many of our young folks.

What a fine job.

Yours faithfully,

Frank Fyffe
