A blueprint of the proposed renovation of the Bartica Stelling was published in SN of Jan 20, 2016, a rare but refreshing happening, indeed. Although I could not quite discern the two-storeyed structure that was being envisaged, this was a welcome development by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, and meant, no doubt, to keep the public fully informed of the strides being taken to modernise infrastructure in our interior.
There is a hive of activity on what used to be the racecourse on Homestretch Avenue, which was reduced to a veritable jungle in one part, and an unsightly dump in another part, directly in view of the St Sidwell’s primary school. So much for the aesthetic aspirations of the former administration, which really could not care less about this country’s capital, but which should be a matter of pride and joy to every self-respecting nation.
The old racecourse is now being transformed into a recreational site where a variety of outdoor activities are to be catered for. The first of these would be the flag-raising ceremony to be held later in the month. But what form and shape would the finished project take? A large area is being developed, no doubt at considerable cost, for the benefit of the citizens of Georgetown, as President David Granger has intimated to the nation, although he would expect it to be a source of pleasure and relaxation for all Guyanese.
I would therefore like to request of the Minister of Public Infrastructure, or whichever Minister has this responsibility, that a blueprint, or better yet, an artist’s impression, be presented to the public to give us some idea of what the new D’Urban Park would look like.
