Is the GSPCA still a humane society?

Dear Editor,

A few days ago a 73-year-old pensioner, who resides at Melanie Damishana on the East Coast of Demerara, called the Guyana Society for the Prevention and Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) and explained to them that she had a slut dog who had recently dropped eight puppies and also another dog she would like them to collect. The person she spoke with advised her that their vehicle only went up to Buxton and recommended someone who could assist her.

She contacted the person and he turned up as promised the following morning and she, along with the dogs, headed down to the GSPCA and he charged her $4,000 to take the animals down to the GSPCA. Upon arrival at the Society, their personnel charged her $5,000 after accepting the dogs. That pensioner had to spend a total of $9,000.

Editor, the GSPCA is supposed to be a charitable organization and usually requests a donation and does not demand a fixed sum. This experience was totally unfair to that poor pensioner.

To the best of my knowledge, the GSPCA is also known as a friendly, humane society and a shelter where you could take your animal for someone to adopt. Apparently, this is no longer happening. A few weeks ago, I was there to take a stray dog and her pups and I met another man who had taken his two six-week old pups for vaccinations. After learning how much the vaccines would cost, he enquired whether he could leave the dogs there to go to the bank and return, but they insisted that was not possible. The young lady emphasized that they do not keep animals. She advised the man that he would have to take them away and return.

Editor, can someone advise of the functions of the Guyana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals as it appears as though the GSPCA is not accommodating animals any longer for adoption but instead, as soon as they are dropped off, they are euthanized.

Yours faithfully,
(Name and address provided)
