A petting zoo in the Promenade Gardens is an outrageous idea

Dear Editor,

Well now the Georgetown City Council has declared its intention to establish a ‘petting zoo’ as part of its plans to upgrade the Promenade Gardens. Immediately coming to mind was the famous saying of Plato, ‘Even the gods love jokes’.

I guess the plan is to find something for those retiring octogenarian city councillors to do after March 18 (the local government elections). Maybe they will look after the donkeys, guinea pigs, goats, apes and other exotic animals. Of course some friend of a senior would certainly get the contract to renovate the Gardens.

I would like to suggest that maybe they could even have a circus on the weekends at the Gardens when there are no statutory meetings, featuring clowns, acrobats, and jugglers.

Editor, are these people serious? Where are all of these spiffing ideas coming from? Is it from the new Town Clerk?

Guyana is fast becoming a comedy corner in the Caribbean.

Is Town Clerk Royston King who made this ‘petting zoo’ announcement unaware that the Promenade Gardens at one time boasted the largest range of wild orchids in the Caribbean before it fell into disrepair during the ʼ80s and ʼ90s? That is what he should be looking to resuscitate.

Is he unaware of the history of the Promenade Gardens, when in August 1851, the Town Council made a decision to create a public promenade for the relaxation of the public, not for it to become a zoo. Will he just willy-nilly be allowed to destroy our heritage with outrageous ideas and dreams?

This nonsense must be stopped now,

Yours faithfully,
Mark Roopan
