Stats Bureau has to make more data available

Dear Editor,

Attempting to gather current statistics in Guyana recently proved to be an exercise in futility. It is virtually impossible for a local company to obtain current information for business expansion. What about a foreign company? What is happening with the Stats Bureau? The last census information available is 2002. Why isn’t there more current census information? Information on importations is another exercise in futility. It is obvious that Stats Bureau employees are incapable of satisfying the basic information needs of this country and we are not even talking yet about catching up with where the rest of the world is in analytics.

Drastic changes are needed to the staff of the organisation to restore it to what it used to be and even have a chance of catching up with rest of the world. It is evident that persons in that organisation do not possess the wherewithal to take the organisation forward and satisfy the information needed for development. Lack of information inhibits investments, results in poor decisions and keeps Guyana backward.

Yours faithfully,

H. Singh
