International news for those who govern us

Dear Editor,

May I make bold to offer three items of international news, the relevance of which appears to have escaped – so far – the notice of the Guyana press.

  1. An evident trend away from beet sugar among US candy marketers, leading some major manufacturers to ask the USDA to allow more imports of cane sugar.
  2. The dismissal of ten thousand ghost workers from the public service payrolls of Tanzania.
  3. The 50th anniversary of the Cultural Revolution in China, passing without official mention except to admit some of the negative consequences.

I don’t suppose that those who govern our country read newspapers any more than the general citizenry do, but we may yet hope against hope that a few among the latter could summon the attention of the former.

Yours faithfully,

Gordon Forte
