Ministry of Public Infrastructure has budgeted for work on Leguan roads to begin in August

Dear Editor,

Reference is made to the letter published in the Monday July 25, edition of the Stabroek News by Mr Hans M Buer, under the headline ‘Leguan roads are in a terrible state’.

In his letter, Mr Buer highlighted the deterioration of roads in Leguan and the struggles faced by those who have no choice but to travel along these roads. Indeed, Leguan is a community that has faced neglect in infrastructural development for years.

It must be noted that the roads in Leguan do not fall under the responsibility of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure; rather, these roads are under the purview of the Ministry of Communities.

Nonetheless, the Ministry of Public Infrastructure recognised Leguan as a priority area and allocated funds in its 2016 budget for the maintenance and rehabilitation of roads on the island, with the hope of alleviating the daily difficulties facing Leguan residents.

Therefore, the ministry wishes to inform Mr Buer, and by extension all residents of Leguan, that works are slated for Leguan in the following areas:

  • The Community Centre Ground Road (Work required: Removal of debris; grading and shaping of verges; cleaning of drains and full depth construction)
  • Koker Dam, Blenheim Road Network (Work required: cleaning of drain; road shoulder works; and full construction of asphaltic concrete pavement)
  • Main Access Road (Work required: clearing of debris; grading and shaping of verges; scarification followed by installation of 100mm aggregate base and overlay to the crushed gravel section; pothole patching; edge repairs; and road rehabilitation to the DBST section)
  • Mid Field Street, Blenheim Road Network (Work required: cleaning of drain; road and shoulder works; ditch excavation and full construction of asphaltic concrete pavement; and installation of timber revetment for culvert)
  • Neville Joseph Street, Blenheim Road Network (Work required: cleaning of drain; road and shoulder works; clearing of debris; ditch excavation and full construction of rigid pavement, with construction joints at 2.4m intervals)
  • Phoenix to Henrietta Road (Work required: cleaning of drains; grading and shaping of verges; and complete construction of road)
  • School Road, Good Intent (Work required: grading and shaping of verges; cleaning of drains; pothole patching, followed by scarification, installation of a 100mm aggregate base and overlay (421m); full depth construction (66m) and rehabilitative works to the timber bridge)

Works in Leguan are scheduled to commence by the first week of August 2016.

Yours faithfully,

Desilon Daniels
