Political leaders should embrace co-ordination, co-operation and cohesion

Dear Editor,

The Rio Olympics has convinced me, that as human beings we can rise to unprecedented heights of achievement, regardless of our background or setbacks. For the past three weeks millions of people across the globe have witnessed the gathering of nations in Brazil, even if only on the internet or their television at home. Others have had the golden opportunity of witnessing these games on site. They took time off from their schedules, work or profession to travel to Rio. They were not disappointed, I am certain. Spectacular, outstanding or remarkable would be inadequate words to truly describe these events.

Print media, commentators and social media have come together to bring us amazing human stories of first-time Olympians and seasoned Olympians who have climbed the ladder of success by dint of faith, courage and strength, all to the glorification of nations. The golden medals received at the end of every event, not only acknowledge a winner, but represent the discipline, integrity and audacity of the individual player and teams.

The highest ideals of life will always come at a price, but some would rather not pay the price that true champions take pride in.

One thing is certain, true champions are not selfish, hateful, distasteful or unpleasant. Rather they are loving, kind, considerate of others and patient, and I have seen these qualities played out in these games. Editor, the last two nights before the closing ceremony – Friday and Saturday ‒ revealed something I feel compelled to share. There was the unique and extraordinary performance of two nations, first and foremost Jamaica on Friday night and Brazil on Saturday night with Usain St Leo Bolt for Jamaica and Neymar for Brazil.

These two nations demonstrated on the race-track and the soccer-field the three C’s – co-ordination, co-operation and cohesion. The three C’s as I see it, are what resulted in the Olympic gold medal going to both teams.

Finally, our politicians in Guyana need to take a lesson from these super-stars who have proven to the world that they are true champions, not because of where they came from, but because of what they are made of.

In the game of life, regardless of whether you are a policeman, politician or sports person, you will never reach the highest level if you lack faith, courage and strength, and if you fail to demonstrate discipline and integrity. Quality of character and humility of mind are sublime and akin to a high pedigree that serves as an inspiration to those who are coming after you.

And for this very reason, our political leaders should embrace co-ordination co-operation and cohesion. May they look inward and humble themselves that we may be proud of them, as true champions of champions.

The spirit of the Olympic Games will always foster the idea that we can accomplish our goals in life, and fulfil our God-given purposes.

Yours faithfully,

Apostle Vanrick Beresford
