Off-road LED lights on vehicles pose a danger

Dear Editor,

There seems to be a dangerously disturbing trend among many vehicle owners in Guyana. This strange and hazardous phenomenon is to install off-road LED light bars on their vehicles. These lights are not only extremely bright, but they are blinding when switched on at night and pose a very serious risk to night drivers.

Already many drivers in Guyana are impulsive high-beam users who drive with little or no regard for the visibility or lack thereof of oncoming drivers. The addition of these off-road LED lights on vehicles emitting blinding white light certainly present a clear and present danger to road users.

The LED lights of which I speak are for off-road use and should definitely not be used on urban roads.

Something definitive must be done by the authorities to eradicate this dangerous practice of vehicle owners installing additional off-road LED lights on their vehicles and using them on our roadways. Vehicle owners must not be allowed to install and use additional lighting on their vehicles that have the potential to be harmful and dangerous to other road users.

Yours faithfully,

Richard Francois
