In Guyana, it is good to enjoy democracy and freedom; the freedom to export, the freedom to import within the confines of the law.
However, it is very annoying that when purchasing over-the-counter drugs, ointments and balms in Guyana, in most cases, there is not a single word of English on the directions of use, the contents of the substance and at times not even the date of manufacturing or expiration.
Bengay is an imported item. Some Bengay are water-based as is the case with other such creams.
Some are without oil and some are without water. My point is, on these boxes, there is no indication in English as to what it is and what it is made of. I have observed that they are manufactured in Turkey.
Such simple things as this with such a popular name, can we in our country and in CARICOM, manufacture Bengay for the parent company or manufacture a similar item that could do the job while allowing its users to understand its effects?
I recall seeing another item called “Bengie”, an oil-based product of similar or better quality that was made in India, but with full directions and ingredients in English. The aim of this letter is to catch the eye of the Ministry of Business, the Ministry of Public Health and the Guyana Revenue Authority’s Customs Adminis-tration.
