The problem is not the messenger but the message

Dear Editor,

I read with interest a letter by Jeumayne Dummett entitled ‘Government’s PR needs a complete revamp’ (SN, December 8) in which he proposes that the APNU+AFC government should up its game to get its message across by better PR.

I would like to suggest to Mr Dummett that the problem is not that the APNU+AFC government cannot get their message across. The problem is the actual message and the behaviour of the APNU+AFC administration.

No amount of positive PR is going to change the 50% pay rise that they gave themselves (without actually achieving anything) or the soon to be introduced 14% VAT on water and electricity ‒ a burden to the citizens of Guyana, etc. PR is all about talk. What the government needs to do is produce policies that will tackle Guyana’s many problems to which they had the solutions when in opposition. Without doing so the Good Life for All is just a pipe dream and means the Good Life for Government MPs.

Intelligent citizens of Guyana are not buying into the APNU+AFC government game-plan of ‘It’s is the PPP/C’s fault; we inherited an economy that was in bad shape’. Instead, they are waking up to the fact that when the government says something bad about the PPP/C it is really a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Yours faithfully,

Sean Ori
