Friendship Cavaliers defeat Kimbia by 176 runs

Ryan De Nobrega’s half century and Daniel Leacock’s four wicket haul, steered Friendship Cavaliers to a 176-run win over Kimbia in last weekend’s final of the Berbice River Cricket Association 50 overs tournament.

Sanctioned by the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) and the National Sports Commission (NSC), Friendship rode on the performances of Leacock who bagged 4 for 9 and the MVP De Nobrega who cracked seven fours and two sixes in his 58, which flattened Kimbia in their match played at the Goed Bananen Land Ground, East Canje Berbice.

After racking up 273 all out in 35.1 overs Friendship were then handed the title on a silver platter after the medium pacer ripped through Kimbia’s lineup, mowing down the eventual losers for 97.

Friendship batted first after winning the toss and were given a 48 run partnership by the openers De Nobrega and Michael Cable (26).

De Nobrega then added 49 for the second wicket with Jason Denhart (22) and followed up with another useful partnership of 20 for the fourth wicket with Preston Fredericks (45), before he was dismissed.

The total also got a boost from Gavaskar Caple (38) and Joshua Leacock (19). Bowling for Kimbia, Samuel Seegobin (2-26), Reon Smith (2-34) and Ecliff Lindee (2-45), were the primary wicket-takers.

During the chase, Waqar Mc Kenzie (3-12) ripped through the top order to leave Kimbia in a spot of bother at 9 for 3. Brentnol Lindee then made a defiant 33, which proved to be the top score as Leacock mopped up the tail with help from De Nobrega (2-26).

Speaking on behalf of the BCB at the presentation, Angela Haniff of the BCB thanked Director of Sports Christopher Jones and the NSC for providing balls for the competition.
