Lady Jags trounced 5-0 by Canada

The Lady Jaguars CONCACAF 2016 Olympic qualifying campaign got off to the worst possible start, losing to giants Canada by a 5-0 score line yesterday at the BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas.

The previous meeting between the nations came in 2010 during the Gold Cup and resulted in a 8-0 win for the Canadians. This outcome was not much different as a first half double from Deanne Rose set the Canadians on the way.

Rose opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a header before completing her double in the 39th minute. Sandwiched between the aforesaid forward’s double was an Ashley Lawrence header in the 28th minute, effectively ending the contest in the first stanza.

The second half proved to be much of the same as Lawrence took over the goal-scoring burden, recording a brace to complete a hat-trick. Lawrence commenced the second period with a 46th minute header before sealing the eventual score line and her hat-trick two minutes onward.

Guyana will now oppose Guatemala in their second fixture at the same locale from 13:30hrs on Sunday.

They will then end their group campaign on Tuesday, February 16th at the same location against Trinidad and Tobago from 18:00hrs.

In the other match of the group, Trinidad and Tobago overcame a one-goal deficit to defeat Guatemala by a 2-1 margin. Kenya Cordner and Tasha St. Louis recorded second half goals in the 74th and 79th minutes respectively.

On target for the loser was Ana Martinez in the 17th minute. Upon the completion of the group stage, the top two finishers from each group will advance to the semi-final round on Friday, February 19th. The resulting finale is slated to occur two days later.
