Khalil, Khan, crowned Handicap squash champs

Ashley Khalil and Kamir Khan were crowned the new Open and Category-A champions respectively when the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) sanctioned Ansa McAl Lucozade Handicap Squash Tourney concluded yesterday.

Staged at the Georgetown Club Facility, Khalil (-3) overcame Adam Alves (+8) by two sets to one.

Alves raced to the early lead, winning the first set 15/9. Khalil, however, battled back to secure the second set 15/10.

The final set proved to be a cliff hanger as Khalil overcame a 6-13 score, going on a 9-1 run to claim the her first handicap championship at 15/14.

On the other hand, Khan (+10) won the Category-A championship after edging Mohyryan Baksh (+10) 2-1. Khan took the lead with a 15/8  first set win.

However, Baksh fought back in the second set which he won 15/12. Khan, however clinched the title in the final set 15/12.

In the Open Category third place playoff between the DeGroot brothers, the younger Raphael (-12) squeaked past Peter Michael (-10) 15/11, 14/15, 15/5. In the Category-A third place match James Mekdeci (+8) crushed Mashal Allicock (+12) 15/12, 15/14.

Meanwhile Javid Rahaman (-1) edged Alec Melville (0) 8/15, 15/13, 15/12 to clinch the Open Category Plate final. In the third place matchup, Ashley De Groot (+3) downed Theron Mohabeer (+7) 15/14, 11/15 and 15/9.

In the Category-A Plate final Madison Fernandes (+5) defeated Mikhail Persaud (+12) in straight games 15/11, 15/11. In the third place match in the division, Abosaide Cadogan (+5) beat Demetrius De Abreu (0) 15/9, 15/1.
