Night of upsets in Petra soft shoe football

It was night of upsets as Sophia, Kitty Weavers and North East La Penitence sealed their quarterfinal berths when the round of 16 stage of  the Ministry of Health/Petra Organization Soft Shoe Championship ended on Saturday.

Sophia secured the biggest upset of the elimination round, downing last year’s losing finalist West Front Road 3-1 at the Ministry of Education ground.

Although the soggy conditions underfoot made passing an arduous task, Sophia took the lead in the fourth minute as Dwayne Lowe scored following a one on one situation into the left side.

Desmond Cottam made it 2-0 in the seventh minute compliments of a first time effort from the centre of the field into the lower right corner.

West Front Road was handed a lifeline in the 17th minute as a cross from the right side was directed into Sophia’s net by the defender in an attempt to clear the danger.

However, Sophia sealed the famous win in the 21st minute as Lowe recorded his second with an attempt from the right side of the field into the right corner.

Meanwhile, North East La Penitence edged Holmes Street Tiger Bay 2-1 through goals from Alwin Moore and Shaquille Brown in the 14th and 33rd minute. On target in the loss was Jahaal Greaves in the 19th minute.

On the other hand, Kitty Weavers came from two goals down to defeat Leopold Street 3-2. Leon Grumble scored twice in the ninth and 23rd minute while Nigel Denny netted in the seventh minute.

On target in the loss were Akeem Rajkumar and Mark Lawrence in the first and third minute. In the final result of the night, Queen Street Tiger Bay squeaked past Alexander Village 1-0 compliments of a Leon Fredericks strike in the 23rd minute.

The event will resume on July 10th at the same venue.
