COUVA, Trinidad, CMC- Barbados, Guyana and host Trinidad and Tobago were winners in the first round of the WICB Regional Under-17 50-over tournament which began at three venues in Couva on Monday.
Barbados opened with a 40 run victory over Jamaica, Guyana eased to a comfortable 44 run win over Leeward Islands while T&T overpowered Windward Islands by 78 runs.
A solid half century from Cephas Cooper lifted T&T to 171 for nine from their 50 overs after they won the toss and elected to bat then bowled out the visitors for 93 at Gilbert Park.
Cooper slammed 57, while Brandon Singh contributed 37 and Te-Shawn Alleyne 21 with the windward bowlers Daneil Dupigney and Johann Jerimah grabbing 3 for 26 and 3 for 30 respectively.
The only act of defiance to the Trinidad bowling was middle order batsman Johnel Eugene who scored 41.
The pick of the T&T bowlers were Nathaniel McDavid with three for four and Justyn Gangoo three for three.
Over at the national Cricket Centre, Joshua Bishop stared with the ball and contributed with the bat as Barbados got the better of Jamaica.
Kadeem Alleyne top scored with 55 from 77 balls as the Bajans piled up 191 for seven from 45 overs after they were sent in by the Jamaicans.
Jamali Lynch was unbeaten on 32 and Joshua Bishop added 22 and returned to grab leading figures of five for 24 including a maiden to lead the demise of Jamaica for 151 in 41.5 overs.
Roberto Simpson was Jamaica’s top bowler in the game with four wickets for 51 runs while Andre McCarty 35 and Ricardo McIntosh 26, were their top scorers.
Also, in a low scoring encounter at Inshan Ali Park, Guyana, sent in, reached 92 for 9 in 26 overs before bowling out Leewards for 48 in 21.4 overs.
Sachin Singh top scored with 22 and Joshua Persuad contributed 19 while Leewards bowler Elroy Francis jnr snatched four for 10 from six overs including a maiden.
Leewards imploded on the chase with opener Joshua Grant getting the top score of 14, the only batsman to get into double figures.
Three Leeward Island players were dismissed without scoring with Bhaskar Yadram emerging as the main destroyer with impressive figures of four for six from 2.4 overs including a maiden.
