Local athletes, chef-de-mission set to depart for Rio

With 10 days until the start of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the world’s best athletes are starting to arrive in the host nation.

Guyana’s contingent will be among them.

The six Olympians who earned the distinction of representing the nation at the prestigious Games will start arriving in Brazil from August 3.

brenessa et alThis is according to Garfield Wiltshire, Guyana’s chef de mission who gave Stabroek Sport an update about the August 5-21 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Wiltshire also told this publication yesterday that he will also be departing this weekend.

Guyana’s contingent includes track and field athletes: Troy Doris (triple jump),Brenessa Thompson (100 and 200m), Aliyah Abrams (400m), Winston George (400m) and swimmers Hannibal Gaskin (100m butterfly) and Jameela Sanmoogan (50m freestyle).

During the 16 days of the Games, athletes from the 205 International Olympic Committee members will be competing in 42 disciplines and over 300 events to determine the world’s fastest, strongest and best.

More than 10,000 athletes will compete in the first edition of the Olympic Games in South America. (Emmerson Campbell)
