Boxers sign contracts for ‘Bad Intentions’ card

The ‘Bad Intentions’ card set for August 27 at the Giftland Mall is now official.

Boxers for the five-fight all-pro event inked their respective contracts yesterday, effectively sealing the deal and virtually putting an end to weeks of speculations and verbal sparring.

The signings took place at the headquarters of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) on the Avenue of the Republic.

USA’s Demarcus ‘Chop Chop’ Corley (46-27-1, 26 KO’s) who has fought world champions like Floyd Mayweather Jr. , Zab Judah, Devon Alexander and Marcos Maidana (all going the distance) will headline the mega boxing card with local prospect, Dexter ‘The Cobra’ Gonsalves (7-1-2).

Gonsalves, 25, will face the 42-year old Corley for the WBC FECARBOX lightweight title.

Corley has been an active boxer since his debut in 1996 and from there, he has fought the best boxers in the world, becoming world champion from 2001 to 2003, so we are talking about a very experienced fighter.

At the height of his career in the early part of the 2000’s, he picked up the WBO super lightweight title and would later pick up a quality victory over the hard punching Randall Bailey. Following his win against Bailey he took on Zab Judah and lost a competitive split decision back in 2003.

However, ‘Chop Chop’ has won five of his last six fights on the road (three within the distance), that snapped a four-fight losing streak. The wily Corley is far from being a finished boxer and will be a handful for the ‘Cobra’ who has won his last three fights by KO.

It will be quite an entertaining match up for fight fans at the new Pattensen edifice in four weeks.

In the co-feature, the organizers have pit middleweight Jamaican, Michael Gardner against Mark ‘The People’s Choice’ Austin in an eight-round contest.

The undercard features a light heavyweight battle involving Kelsie George and Charwin Estwick (four rounds), a six-round lightweight rematch (Imran Khan versus Quincy Gomes) and some fresh talent. Debutant, Anthony Narine will lace it up against Keeve Allicock.
