Lambe on the mark as Carlisle edge nine-goal thriller

LONDON, CMC  — Bermudian winger Reggie Lambe was on the scoresheet as 10-man Carlisle United twice came from behind to beat Oldham Athletic in a nine-goal thriller at Boundary Park yesterday night as the group stage of the new Checkatrade Trophy got under way.

Lambe’s third goal of the season– with an unstoppable right-foot from outside the box in the 22nd minute — helped the League Two visitors establish a two-goal interval lead over their League One opponents in the revamped tournament which was previously known as the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Oldham quickly levelled after the break and went ahead in the 66th minute but Carlisle would not be denied and scored twice more to win 5-4 despite being reduced to 10 men in the 82nd minute when Newcastle loanee Macaulay Gillesphey received a straight red card after pulling Darius Osei back as the striker went clean through.

Osei’s brace in the 48th and 49th minutes had earlier got Oldham back on level pegging.

Despite being a player short, Carlisle struck late to claim victory, Michael Raynes scoring his second goal of the night as he headed an 89th minute winner.

Bermudian striker Rai Simons got a rare start for League One side Chesterfield and played for 61 minutes before being withdrawn, Chesterfield beating Wolves Under-23s 2-1.
