Nurse blames lack of fitness for defeat to Suriname

Chris Nurse, captain of the Guyana senior football team said a lack of fitness was the main reason the team was beaten by Suriname in the third round opener of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Caribbean Cup Qualifiers.

On Saturday at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium in Paramaribo, Guyana lost to their traditional Dutch rival by 2-3 margin. They now await champions Jamaica in a must-win contest tomorrow at the Leonora Sports Facility.

In an invited comment with Stabroek Sports, the veteran midfielder said:” I think the team gave a valiant effort and they fought with what they have. The staff had a difficult task because only three players had been playing consistent matches and we know this is not sufficient for success at international level.

“The stagnation of the local league has had a significant impact on the fitness of a large portion of the squad”, Nurse added, pointing out that had the local based contingent possessed greater fitness levels, they would have played an important dominant role.

“First 30 minutes we showed our potential, we dominated the game and it looked like we would take the victory comfortably. But as the game wore on and fitness became an issue [and] our hands were tied. Based on the circumstances the players gave all they could and should be applauded for their efforts based on the circumstances,” he opined.

Asked what is needed to be successful against the holders, the English born Nurse declared: “October 11 is going to be a battle and a fight. It will be more of a mental and physical test because the pitch is not one that allows for eloquent, stylish football. It will be a battle and a fight at Leonora and the condition of the field will probably level the teams and make the competition more even.”

Nurse said he wanted the local soccer fans to come out and support the team.

“We will need the fans behind the team fully to win this battle, its Guyana v Jamaican that’s the motivation for the team right there. It’s about pride and respect, it’s going to be a fight. The players will bring the heart, passion and desire that the people can respect and be proud of.

“Effort and commitment will not be in question. We need the fans to fight with us, not against us and support the players for the whole game to overcome some of the disadvantages we face as a football fraternity in Guyana.

“Be loud, be positive and let’s win this battle with a disciplined, organized battle against the Reggae Boyz. This is Guyana, this is our home and we will defend it with all our heart. Look forward to a great match up on Tuesday night,” Nurse added.
