Guyana Fashion Week set for May 20 launch

The Golden Jubilee edition of Guyana Fashion Week is set to be launched at a red carpet affair on May 20 at Colgrain House.

According to a press release from GFW, the launch is being held under the auspices of the Ministry of Telecommunications and Tourism and signals the event’s return to the national calendar of events.

It notes that GFW must be applauded for being the second longest running fashion week in the region and incorporating the promotion of the Caribbean aesthetic as one of its primary objectives. The actual event is billed for November 5 to 13.

Auditions for models for the event end today. Today’s session will run from 2 pm to 6 pm at Water Chris Hotel, Waterloo and Quamina streets.

Chief Executive Officer of GFW Sonia Noel has already held a preliminary meeting of designers whose collections are likely to appear on the GFW catwalk and has reported that the response was favourable.

This event started some nine years ago as Guyana Fashion Weekend with the aim being to foster the creative industry and allow for young designers to be seen. Over the years, Sonia introduced offshoots including Guyana Model Search and Designer Portfolio with the same purpose in mind – creating a space for young models and designers.

The release mentioned some of the winners of these events who have gone on to model regionally and internationally: Anasha Dutchin, Amanda King, Niketa Barker, Meleesa Payne, Jamain Victor, Tyrone Hamid and Yohlanda Kerr.

The release said that this year, the agenda is brand development, finishing techniques and unique sales positioning and there will be seminars to expand the knowledge base in this direction.

It added that celebrated production designer Richard Young will once again be at the helm of GFW and at the meeting with prospective participating designers, he emphasized the importance of brand awareness and sustainable diversification.
