Chinese Lucky Bamboo

Lucky Bamboo is actually a member of the Dracaena sanderiana family even though the plant resembles a Bamboo. Lucky Bamboo originated in China and South East Asia, but is now popular in Europe, North America and the Caribbean.

Lucky Bamboo is a Chinese symbol of good luck. It comes in different shapes, styles and numbers.

Lucky Bamboo can grow in rocks, water or soil. There are many novelty pots or jars with different styles of Lucky Bamboo.

Remember to change the water once per week. Containers should be half with water and rocks and use of bottled or rain water is advisable. There is a special liquid fertilizer for this plant sold at selective nurseries. It is an indoor plant that likes filtered light but not direct sunlight.

It makes a good novelty plant in the home or office and it is low maintenance and easy to care for.

Chinese New Year was celebrated yesterday. It is the Year of the Red Rooster and many Chinese families would have decorated their homes, shops and offices with Lucky Bamboo plants. They would also offer them as gifts to their families and friends.

Happy Chinese New Year or Kong Hee Fat Choy to all.

Until next week, Happy Gardening.
