Lilith Lindie celebrates 100th birthday

Guyanese Lilith Lenora Lindie, a former Nurse Aide, on January 17 celebrated her 100th birthday in the United States of America.

According to a statement from her family, the new centenarian was born on January 17, 1917 in Solitude, Upper Berbice River, Guyana, to parents Albert and Ariel Bender, who were both church ministers.

Lindie attended a Catholic Girls School in New Amsterdam up to age 15. From an early age, she developed a love for sewing and would often take her mother’s clothes and cut them up to make new pieces.

In 1938, she married the man who is said to be the love of her life, Cedrick Lindie and they parented nine children and made a home at De Veldt, Berbice for 20 years. Their union lasted until 1957, when Cedrick became ill and passed away.

Twenty-two years after her husband’s passing, Lindie migrated to the United States, where she lived in Brooklyn for 23 years. During those 23 years, she entered into the nursing profession, becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Lindie now resides in Georgia, USA with five of her children. She has 39 grandchildren, 65 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.

Lindie, though an American citizen now, has not forgotten the land of her birth and on occasions would visit a son who lives in Guyana. She also has grandchildren and great grandchildren who live in Guyana as well.

The agile centenarian is said to be the sixth member of the family to attain the age of 100 in two generations. The other family members who attained this milestone were her brother and sister, who both passed away at 100, her two cousins, who passed away at 105 and 107 and an aunt who also passed away at 105.

According to her family, Lindie who is a good conversationalist, still cleans her room, does gardening and helps out in the kitchen. Lindie was named the Mother of Greater Trinity United Methodist Church in Saint Marys, Georgia, USA, since she is the oldest member in the church.

According to Lindie’s granddaughter, Luana Falconer, her grandmother is an outgoing woman who is very energetic for her age. Falconer said that her grandmother does not walk with her cane even though she has one.
