Fire erupts in doctor’s quarters at Diamond Hospital

A doctor escaped with just minor burns on his hand after his quarters at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre went up in flames yesterday afternoon.

Head of Operations of the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), Compton Sparman explained to Stabroek News that the fire service was alerted about a rubbish fire but were surprised when they were greeted with a destroyed room.

“We got the call about a rubbish fire but it was a building fire.

Part of the quarters that was destroyed by the fire.

One fire tender went because we thought it was a rubbish fire and people have to be careful with what they report to us.

However, luckily by the time we got there it was EBA (extinguished before arrival),” Sparman said.

He explained that the doctor who lived in the room had gone back to grab his important documents when he suffered a first degree burn on his hand.

While Sparman explained that the origin of the fire is currently unknown, a source related to Stabroek News that there were illegal connections in the room to an Air Conditioning Unit, which was left on while the doctor was at work.

According to the source, the building was not designed to take such heavy loads.
