Man who died on CAL flight identified as Bath resident

Relatives of the passenger who collapsed and later died onboard a Caribbean Airlines, New York-bound flight, BW 526, necessitating an emergency stop at the San Juan Airport in Puerto Rico, will identify his body before it is returned to Guyana for burial.

The man, Nazrudeen Mohammed, 64, a citizen of New York, USA was returning from a two-month stay at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice home when tragedy struck.

His son, Nazim told Stabroek News that his father was suffering from an injury to his right knee that he sustained from a fall in New York a few years ago. He said his father was also diabetic and was scheduled to return to New York in time for his medical treatment.

Nazim is not sure of the details of what happened on the plane when his father died as he was traveling alone. Mohammed’s wife, Bibi Mohammed has since spoken to the officials of CAL.

One passenger on the Wednesday flight related to Stabroek News that around 8:47 PM the pilot announced that there was a medical emergency on board and they were being re-directed to Puerto Rico.

The flight which left the Cheddi Jagan International Airport at about 5:30 pm landed at the San Juan International Airport and Paramedics boarded in an attempt to resuscitate the man who had lost consciousness.

These efforts proved futile and two hours after landing a Medical Examiner came on board to pronounce him dead.
