Shot pandit recovering

The overseas-based Guyanese pandit who was shot during the wee hours of Saturday is showing signs of recovery.

Heeralall Doobay, 46, of Queens, New York, United States and Prospect, East Bank Demerara (EBD) remains a patient in the Intensive Care Unit at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

According to his wife, Rookmin Krishun-Doobay, the pandit has undergone  surgery.

She also said “he doesn’t have any feeling in the hands right now and doctors say only time would tell with therapy.”

The woman explained that last Sunday they had both flown into the country for a funeral and he had taken her to the airport on Friday and had returned to their residence in Prospect. She said that after she heard of the shooting and robbery she flew back into the country yesterday morning.

The wife said that based on the information she received her husband was sleeping when the men broke into their house.

“He confronted them and chopped one. He had some money and they go away with that but I don’t know is how much,” the wife related.

Stabroek News understands that no arrest has been made as yet in relation to the matter.

According to reports, the bandits had to break down three doors to get into the house. The men entered the premises by scaling the concrete fence at the back of the house.

They later escaped on motorcycles with a quantity of jewellery and an undisclosed amount of cash. After he was shot, the pandit ran out of the house and sought assistance from the public.

His wife said he was taken to the hospital by police officers who responded to the report. He was shot in  the left side of his chest.
