Israeli government move is a backward step

Dear Editor,

The Guyana Peace Council (GPC) joins with the international community in condemning the appropriation of privately-owned Palestinian lands for the purpose of Jewish settlements.

The GPC has noted the statement issued by the UN Secretary General António Guterres who declared, inter alia, “The  new law is in violation of international law and will have far reaching consequences for Israel.”

The GPC welcomes the support extended by the governments of France, the United Kingdom, Jordan and Turkey to the Palestinian Authority whose President, Mahmoud Abbas, has described the move as “an attack on the Palestinian people.”

The GPC considers the move by the Israeli government as a backward step and a further attempt to torpedo the Two State solution.

The GPC has further noted the observation by the Israeli political opposition that the legislation may very well reach the International Criminal Court.

The GPC reaffirms its support for and solidarity with the Palestinian cause and looks to the international community as well as progressive, democratic and peace-loving forces around the world to continue lending support to the Palestinian  people in their just struggles.

Yours faithfully,

Clement Rohee

President
